Overhauling True Union Ball Valves
(Printer Friendly PDF File)

1 True Union Ball Valve 2 Removing the Valve Body 3 Ready for Disassembly 4 Valve Seal Removal
True Union Ball Valves have been designed to be easy to service and repair. The valve can be overhauled without disconnecting the system piping connections. To remove the valve body simply unscrew the two assembly nuts. The valve body lifts out…ready for disassembly. The system piping connections are not disturbed. Inspect the two end connector o-rings on the valve body for damage as well as the sealing surface of the end connectors. The valve seal retainer can be removed with a spanner wrench, a seal retainer tool available from FDPP or, more commonly, by using screwdrivers to turn the retainer out of the valve body as shown
5 Inspect Seal 6 Removing Ball 7 Removing Valve Handle 8 Closed Position
Inspect the seal retainer o-ring for damage. The ball can now be removed. Inspect for damage. Next remove the valve handle, it’s a compression fit on the valve stem. A plastic mallet can be used…..or…… The valve can be put in the closed position and the handle gently tapped on the end of a work bench.
9 Pushing Down on Stem 10 Removal 11 Inspection 12 Removing seals
Pushing down on the stem forces it into the body….. Where it can be removed Inspect the two stem o-rings for damage. Remove one of the two PTFE seats from the seal retainer.
13 Removing Seals 14 Replacing Seats 15 Finishing Up

The other PTFE seat is removed from inside the valve body. Inspect the seats for damage. While the valve is disassembled it’s always good practice to replace the seats and all o-rings no matter what their condition. That’s all there is to it. Reverse the procedure to re-assemble the valve and put it back into service.
