Titan Model BS55 and BS 65 Simplex Strainers

Cast Iron Basket Strainers

Titan BS65 SImplex Basket Strainer

Model BS55 (clamp closure) and BS65 (bolted closure) simplex basket strainers are available in 2" to 20" sizes, both models have adjustable mounting feet and drain plug.

How to choose between the Eaton 72/73 or Keckley GFV and Titan BS55/65 cast iron simplex basket strainers?

This is a great example of the fallacy of simply comparing strainers by their connection size!

While comparing pricing and lead time are typically how many customers decide what to order, the flow coefficient (Cv) values should be compared from a performance perspective.

Basket strainers which have a higher Cv (flow coefficient) value begin with a lower differential (clean basket) pressure drop for a given flow rate and thus may not need to be cleaned as often.  How important this is to you depends on your particular application.  Perhaps only small batches are involved and cleaning the basket once before each batch is the standard procedure, than it may not matter much. In other cases the time between cleaning might significantly impact labor hours, exposure of the personnel to the fluid, interrupt the process or affect flow rate because of the differential pressure.  Another way of looking at Cv values is that basket strainers having higher Cv values can handle higher flow rates at a given pressure (something that is especially important when centrifugal pumps are involved).

SIZE BRAND/MODEL
EATON TITAN KECKLEY
30R 72 73 BS55/65 BS25 GFV
2" 90 73   45 70 43
2½" 140 125   90 90 78
3" 200 180   140 140 120
4" 240 350   290 290 277
5"       500   442
6" 370 900   800 780 743
8" 600 1400   1600 1600 1486
10"     2300 2800   3052
12"     3200 3700   4981
14"     5000 5100   7985
16"     6000 6800   9566
18"     7000
20"       10900

Referring to the chart above, the smaller size strainers offered by Eaton will generally "perform better" than the other brands.  Keckley's GFV series will perform best for the 12" - 16" sizes.

The significance of these differences really depends upon application characteristics such as flow rate, particulate loading, type of pump system and desired frequency of basket cleaning.

Comparing the 4" size strainers, you will find their performance to be very close, so your choice might come down to design (quick-opening or bolted closure), cost and lead time.
