The first step is to select the strainer size, input the maximum flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM), select the desired particle retention and, if your fluid isn't water or "water-like", input the specific gravity (Sg) and viscosity (SSU).
The calculator will automatically update the theoretical clean differential pressure drop along with the maximum flow rate with a perforated basket based upon the maximum recommended 2 PSIG clean differential pressure. The flow coefficient value (Cv) is also provided for reference for calculations of overall piping pressure drop.
Your strainer should have a clean differential pressure drop ≤ 2 PSIG and the basket cleaned once the differential pressure increases by 5 PSIG. Assuming a consistent particle load, a lower initial (clean) differential pressure may equate to longer time between basket cleaning; it also means that it can handle a higher flow rate.
In some cases your flow rate might make one particular model more appropriate than another. There are also different features, such as bolted covers vs. quick-opening covers (requiring tools or not to access the strainer basket for cleaning). If it is a hot, high pressure or otherwise dangerous fluid, quick basket chamber access is not a desirable feature!
